Christopher Walken LIES that it’s his Birthday

Best Black Friday streaming deals for 2025: One year of the Disney+ Hulu bundle for $60, plus save on Apple TV+, HBO Max and more

I notice that the Hulu and Disney+ Black Friday bundle has gone up to $5 per month for a year.  It was $3.  I might get this, but I am more interested in HBO Max.  My problem with Disney+ is that even though they have a huge library, they don't offer much new content.

I am holding out for an Amazon or Netflix Black Friday deal.  However, I've never seen Netflix discount their service.

Ryan Gosling explains how to turn debt into money | The Big Short

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_DQtUK-FXg

This is a good movie, but its one failing is that it does not explain the government's role in the 2008 financial crisis.  Instead it blames greedy capitalists.

I am sure that there were greedy capitalists, but banks do not want to make bad loans.  It is a terrible business strategy.  Major corporations do not want to make bad investments.  I assume, rightly or wrongly, that investment banks do not want to sell bad and fraudulent securities to their customers.

The government created two Government Sponsored Enterprises to create and sell mortgage back securities to create liquidity in the housing loan market.  Then the government passed the Community Reinvestment Act that set goals for GSE's to pressure banks to create mortgages for people who would otherwise not be qualified   Also, there was no incentive for banks to make good loans when the GSE's would buy the loans regardless at a profit for the bank.  This is the cause of the subprime mortgage crisis.

When the government interferes with the free market, usually worse results happen.

I remember a commercial on TV in the 2000's, probably created by a GSE, showing a black family being able to afford their first home.  This was the motivation of the government.

Fans React to The Mandalorian Chapter 16: "The Rescue"

From 5 years ago.  I thought that this was one of the most powerful and emotional moments in Star Wars.

These two characters will star in a Star Wars movie coming out in May.

A bit of background:

The Mandalorian is an excellent streaming series for the first two seasons.

The story is that a Mandalorian bounty hunter encounters a "baby Yoda", Grogu, who is Force sensitive, and he effectively adopts the child.  They search the galaxy for other Jedi that the child could be with, and on a special planet Grogu was able to send a signal  through the Force to any Jedi that might still exist.

When the child is kidnapped by remnants of The Empire, the heroes attempt a rescue mission, but find themselves trapped and in trouble.  Then a mysterious stranger shows up to save the day.

This leads to a very emotional parting.   The Mandalorian, played by popular actor Pedro Pascal, has a taboo against removing his helmet.

14 Forgotten Sci-Fi Films Of The 1980s That Predicted The Future

Most of these movies are not particularly good.

In the comments section, people complained that the narration is AI generated, which is ironic.

I don't think that the video is as insightful as it claims to be.  Common tropes of science fiction going back a hundred years, such as the movie Metropolis, are about the over reliance on technology, machines that can think for themselves, and those machines turning on their creators.  In fact, it is hard to find science fiction that doesn't touch on at least one of these ideas.

Hitler's Steiner Rant - Depictions in Film & TV

This scene has been depicted in multiple movies by different actors.  I think that the one from "Downfall" might be the most historically accurate, because it comes from an account by his personal secretary.  I watched this movie about 25 years ago and really liked it.

The Most Important Device in the Universe - Blinking Tubes Without Function

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phPp5oYnps0

So I guess that the joke is that the same useless prop keeps showing up in many science fiction movies and shows going back decades.

The first sequence is from "Airplane II: The Sequel" released in 1982.

Alien Earth Season 1

I finished the 8th episode of Alien Earth Season 1. Stories like this need conflict to remain interesting, and I questioned whether the conflict could or should have played out the way it did, but without the conflict there wouldn't have been much of a story. It seems to me that most science fiction shows are soap operas anyway. The good news is that I found the story suspenseful and that it kept me on the edge of my seat. There are some gross special effects, but not too terrible.
I know that some YouTubers were unhappy with the series, but YouTubers in particular can be hard to please. The series brings up interesting ideas about AI, which is as much the central focus of the story as the alien monsters. This goes back to the question of whether you would choose to continue your life in a robotic body?

Disney+ and Hulu

I told Disney+ to cancel my subscription on October 27th, which is my renewal date.  My motivation is that if I want to take advantage of any Black Friday deals in November, they *might* let me do it.

Two years ago on Black Friday, I signed up for Hulu for $1 per month, which also offered Disney+ for an extra $2 — a deal I took advantage of.  A year later, they didn't allow me to renew Hulu with the same Black Friday offer, but I was still able to get the deal through Disney+ for $2 per month, with the option to add Hulu for an extra $1.  So I went with that.

I don't particularly like commercials, but the low cost makes it worthwhile.   And since I watch most of my shows on my computer, I can multitask while the ads play.

As of this month, Disney+ and Hulu are no longer separate services in some countries — they've been combined under Disney+.  Disney plans to roll out this change in the United States by mid next year.   As I previously wrote, I think that this is a cost savings measure.

Something I'm considering is subscribing to just one full-priced streaming service at a time — watching it for a while, then switching to a different one at full price. However, the thing about Disney+ and Hulu is that their Black Friday prices are so low that I might as well get them anyway, regardless of whatever other subscription I have at the time.
