The Sheep Detectives

When a kind-hearted but gruff shepherd, played by Hugh Jackman, is murdered, his flock of sheep takes it upon themselves to solve his murder.

I wanted to see The Sheep Detectives in my local theater because it received much critical acclaim, but it didn't stay in the theater very long, so I missed it. I'm glad that I saw it on Amazon Prime, because overall, I would call it a lightweight movie. The animated sheep are interesting, but the many not-so-smart human characters would lose a battle of wits with the sheep, and actually do.

The sheep characters are the best part of the film, with distinct personalities and some individual idiosyncrasies. There are some emotional moments that work well.

The movie leads us to believe that a character played by a certain famous actress might be the murderer, but that would be too obvious. The ending is a big surprise, although maybe a bit too convenient.

I have to give the movie credit for being innovative, but it doesn't get very interesting until the second half. However, I liked the payoff, and this is a film with a lot of heart.

For a family-friendly comedy, it makes for passable entertainment. It is not a perfect movie, but I'm glad I watched it.

Rating: B

P.S.  The Shaun The Sheep movies have more humor and are more entertaining overall.
