Onward (2020)

A long time ago, there was magic. It was used to help people and improve their lives. However, magic was difficult to master, and once people discovered technology—which was easier—they gradually forgot about it.

This feels like a world that could have been explored much more deeply, but the movie plays it safe by making all the characters feel no different from modern, somewhat ordinary humans. That said, this is partly the point, since the story depicts a culture that has lost touch with its heritage.

The film holds a pleasant surprise. What seems at first like a three-star movie ultimately delivers a strong, four-star ending. This is by no means the best Pixar film, but Pixar can still work a bit of magic of its own.

In Onward, the two main characters—both elves and brothers—set out on a quest to find a magical way to bring back their long-deceased father for just one day so they can meet him. Along the way, they discover more about themselves and help their culture reconnect with what it has lost.

Rating: B+.  I would love to see a sequel that explores this world in greater depth.

P.S. There is a lot of material in the trailer that didn’t make it into the final movie. This sometimes happens when a film undergoes multiple revisions before release.
